How Do We Achieve?
Written by a Master of Nigeria's print media, Conversations with Nigeria and the World is a moving critique of Nigerian politics and public life against the background of a galloping global economy. This OJ's “No laughing matter" Series, Book 1, Tales & Conversations; is comedy, satire, mixed fiction and nonfiction with cartoon vistas, all in one. Running through these discourses is a wish, a prayer, and a comedic dialogue to show us how Nigeria could still be transformed to a modern industrial state in our lifetime.

The Author
Prof. Onwuchekwa Jemie is a renowned literary scholar and poet and one of the pioneers of modern Nigerian journalism.
Jemie was educated in the United States at Columbia (BA, PhD) and Harvard (Masters). As a professor of English & Comparative Literature he participated in the struggle to establish African American Studies programs in American universities in the 1960s and 70s. His duty posts included the City University of New York, University of Minnesota, and Howard University.

On returning to Nigeria in 1977, Dr. Jemie chaired the Department of Communication & Languages at the Institute of Management & Technology (IMT), Enugu. In 1982 he joined the team of scholars, creative writers and journalists that “master-puppeteer” Stanley Macebuh assembled in Lagos to found The Guardian, the newspaper that transformed Nigerian journalism. Jemie was the Editorial Page Editor and Chairman of the Editorial Board, and wrote analytical and satirical columns on politics and public affairs. In 2008 he became Editor-in-Chief of BusinessDay, Nigeria’s prestigious economy and finance daily, until recent retirement.

Jemie’s books include: Biafra: Requiem for the Dead in War (1970); Voyage and Other Poems (1971); Langston Hughes: An Introduction to the Poetry (1976), his influential study of the great African American poet which argued for his recognition as a major American poet; and Toward the Decolonization of African Literature (1980), the book that set African Literary Studies on a new course, coauthored with Dr. Chinweizu & Dr. I. Madubuike. Jemie also edited the raucous folklore collection Yo’ Mama!: New Raps, Toasts, Dozens, Jokes & Children’s Rhymes from Urban Black America (2003).
